Provision VMs for your blueprint with the Server step

The Server step provisions a server in your target resource location. Typically, this step is used as a reference point for subsequent steps in your blueprint. For example, you might include scripts that rename and reboot the server or configure the server as an Active Directory domain controller. The steps for these scripts would point to the Server step as the target for execution.

Supported resource locations

The Server step is supported in blueprints that are deployed on all resource locations supported in Smart Tools.

Step configuration options

When you add the Server step to your blueprint, the following tabs appear in the Blueprint Designer:

  • Config: By default, the Server step displays the message "Please configure this launch step at deployment time." When you deploy the blueprint, you have the opportunity to configure the VM that Smart Tools will provision. 
  • Options: Includes the following options for configuring failure conditions, installation requirements for the Citrix Smart Tools Agent, and restricting changes to the number of VM instances deployed.
    • On failure: Configure failure conditions for the Server step. The available options are:

      During deployment, the Install Citrix Smart Tools Agent on new VMs checkbox is selected by default. If you prefer not to install the agent on the VMs, you can clear the checkbox.

      Required

      During deployment, agent installation is mandatory. You need to enter the required details to proceed with the server configuration.

      Don't allow

      During deployment, agent installation wizard is not displayed.

 

    • VM Instance Count: Specify the number of VM instances for blueprint deployment. To restrict changes to the number of VM instances during deployment, select Don't allow changes during deployment.
    • Agent installation: Select an option to define whether agent installation is required on the VMs during blueprint deployment. The available options are:

  • Recommended Config: Allows you to specify the recommended configuration of the provisioned VM such as operating system, memory, disk space, and so on. When the blueprint is deployed, the recommended configuration is displayed in the VM configuration wizard. 
  • Step Help: Provides space for you to add helpful information to the step. To add this information, click Add Tooltip. When the blueprint is deployed, a help icon is displayed next to the step. Pointing to the help icon displays the tooltip text. 

To configure the Server step

  1. Create a new blueprint or edit an existing one. Ensure the Deploy page of the Blueprint Designer is displayed.
  2. In the left pane, expand Cloud Steps and drag and drop the Server step into your blueprint.
  3. Configure the Options, Recommended Configuration, and Step Help tabs as appropriate for your blueprint. 
  4. Click Save to save your step configurations.
