Migrate XenApp 6.x manually with Smart Tools

Overview

This topic describes migrating a XenApp 6.x deployment to an existing XenApp 7.x deployment that you specify. 

Important: Before performing a migration, review the migration prerequisites described in Prepare to migrate your XenApp 6.x or VDI-in-a-Box 5.4 deploymentAdditionally, review the Migrate XenApp 6.x topic on the Citrix Product Documentation web site for in-depth information about the application and policy settings that will and will not be migrated. See the "Limitations" section of the topic.

Step 1: Create a migration project

  1. Log on to the Citrix Smart Tools web site. The home page appears.
  2. From the menu bar, click Smart Migrate and then click Add Migration Project. The Add Migration Project wizard appears.
  3. Enter a friendly name and, optionally, a description for your project.
  4. In Migration Type, select XenApp 6.0 to XenApp 7.x or XenApp 6.5 to XenApp 7.x, depending on the XenApp version you want to migrate.
  5. Click Add. The project page for your migration appears.

Step 2: Set up XenApp 7.x

  1. On the migration project page, select No, do not connect my environment to Smart Tools and then click Next
  2. Under XenApp 7.x deployment details, review the XenApp 7.x checklist and ensure you have the components  and information required to set up and configure a new XenApp 7.x deployment. Where appropriate, each section includes links to additional information on the Citrix Product Documentation web site.
  3. After your XenApp 7.x deployment is configured, continue the migration.

Step 3: Analyze your XenApp 6.x farm

  1. Under XenApp 6.x farm details, perform the following actions:
  2. Click Download scripts to download the ReadIMA.zip file from Smart Tools. 
  3. Log on to the XenApp 6.x controller as an administrator and extract the contents of the ReadIMA.zip file.
  4. Open a PowerShell console and set the current directory to the script location.
  5. Verify the PowerShell execution policy is set to RemoteSigned by running Get-ExecutionPolicyTo set the execution policy, type Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned.
  6. To run the scripts, follow the instructions in the Step-by-step: export data section of the Migrate XenApp 6.x topic located on the Citrix Product Documentation web site. The scripts produce two XML files: one for farm application settings and one for farm policy settings.
  7. On the migration project page in Smart Tools, upload the XML files you created in Step 6:
    1. Click Upload application XML file and specify the XML file containing your farm application settings.
    2. Click Upload policy XML file and specify the XML file containing your farm policy settings.
  8. Click Analyze XenApp farm. Smart Tools analyzes the XML files and displays the number of XenApp servers, applications, and policies in the farm.
  9. Click Next. Smart Tools displays the analyzed applications and policies.

Step 4: Select applications and policies for migration

  1. Under Migration Details, click the Analyzed Applications category and select the applications you want to migrate. 
  2. Click the Analyzed Policies category and select the policies you want to migrate.
  3. Click Proceed to Migration. Smart Tools prompts you to create a batch for the items you selected. 
  4. Enter a name for the batch. By default, the batch name is automatically generated; however, you can change this to a different name. 
  5. Review the list of selected items. If you want to remove any items, point to the item and click Remove.
  6. When you are ready to migrate your selected applications and policies, click Generate batch migration script. Smart Tools creates a ImportFMA.zip file that you can use to import your application and policy settings to your XenApp 7.x site. When finished, Smart Tools displays your migrated batch.

Step 5: Import migrated settings to your XenApp 7.x site

  1. From the Migrated Batches page in Smart Tools, select the batch you just created.
  2. Click Download migration script to retrieve the ImportFMA.zip file that Smart Tools created for you. 
  3. Log on to a Delivery Controller in your XenApp 7.x site as an administrator and extract the contents of the ImportFMA.zip file.
  4. Open a PowerShell console and set the current directory to the script location.
  5. Verify the PowerShell execution policy is set to RemoteSigned by running Get-ExecutionPolicy. To set the execution policy, type Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned.
  6. To run the script, follow the instructions in the Step-by-step: import data section of the Migrate XenApp 6.x topic located on the Citrix Product Documentation web site.

If you did not specify parameters for Delivery Groups during the import process, Smart Tools creates a Delivery Group in the XenApp 7.x site, using the XenApp 6.x farm name, and imports the selected application and policy settings.

To verify migration was successful, launch Citrix Studio and connect to the site. In the left pane, click Delivery Groups. In the top middle pane, the Delivery Groups tab displays the new Delivery Groups that you specified during the import process. In the lower middle pane, the Applications tab displays the migrated applications in each Delivery Group.
