Prepare to migrate your XenApp 6.x or VDI-in-a-Box 5.4 deployment

 Contents

Overview

This topic describes the preparation needed to use Smart Tools in the following migration scenarios:

  • Migrating your XenApp Infrastructure from the IMA architecture of Versions 6.0 and 6.5 to the new FMA architecture of XenApp 7.x.
  • Migrating your VDI-in-a-Box 5.4 deployment to XenDesktop 7.x.

XenApp 6.x migrations

Smart Tools intelligently exports your existing farm policies and settings and seamlessly imports them into your new XenApp and XenDesktop 7.x Site.

Before starting the migration, refer to the PrepareBuild, and Integrate sections of the XenApp Migration and Upgrade guide on the Citrix web site. This guide provides additional resources to help you prepare your XenApp 6.x deployment for migration.

You can migrate your XenApp 6.x farm using the following options:

  • Automated migration: Connect your XenApp 6.x and 7.x controllers to Smart Tools and perform the migration.
  • Manual migration: Run the migration scripts on your XenApp controllers and upload the farm policies and settings to Smart Tools for migration.

VDI-in-a-Box 5.4 migrations

Smart Tools uses the golden image VM you specify and the PowerShell scripts generated from the Migrate to Citrix Studio wizard in VDI-in-a-Box to import your Machine Catalog and Delivery Group settings to XenDesktop 7.x. For more information about using the Migrate to Citrix Studio wizard, see Migrate to XenDesktop on the Citrix Product Documentation web site.

Automated XenApp migrations

Prerequisites

Before you perform an automated XenApp migration, ensure you have the following items:

  • A XenApp 7.x deployment in a supported resource location. You can deploy XenApp and XenDesktop 7.x to your resource location using your own deployment process or you can use the XenApp and XenDesktop blueprints available in Smart Tools. For more information about using these blueprints, see Deploy XenApp and XenDesktop blueprints to a production environment
  • All XenApp 6.x and 7.x controllers have the Smart Tools Agent installed. The Smart Tools Agent collects the farm data needed to migrate and import your applications and policies to XenApp 7.x. Without the agent installed, Smart Tools cannot locate these servers in your network environment. If you deployed XenApp 7.x using a blueprint, the Smart Tools Agent is already installed on each machine in the deployment. For instructions on installing the agent, see Install or remove the Smart Tools Agent.
  • All XenApp 6.x and 7.x controllers have the PowerShell execution policy set to RemoteSigned. The migration process involves running PowerShell scripts and all XenApp servers must have permission to run them. Before migrating, verify the execution policy on each server by running Get-ExecutionPolicy in the PowerShell console.

Task overview

  1. Connect your XenApp 6.x and 7.x controllers to Smart Tools.
  2. Smart Tools analyzes the XenApp 6.x configuration XML files. Afterward, you select the application and policy settings that you wish to migrate.
  3. Migrate the selected applications and policies.

For instructions for performing an automated XenApp migration, see Migrate XenApp 6.x by connecting with Smart Tools

Manual XenApp migrations

Prerequisites

Before you perform a manual XenApp migration, ensure you have the following items:

  • A XenApp 7.x deployment in a supported resource location. You can deploy XenApp and XenDesktop 7.x to your resource location using your own deployment process or you can use the XenApp and XenDesktop blueprints available in Smart Tools. For more information about using these blueprints, see Deploy XenApp and XenDesktop blueprints to a production environment
  • All XenApp 6.x and 7.x servers have the PowerShell execution policy set to RemoteSigned. The migration process involves running PowerShell scripts and all XenApp servers must have permission to run them. Before migrating, verify the execution policy on each server by running Get-ExecutionPolicy in the PowerShell console.

Task overview

  1. Download and execute the PowerShell scripts on the XenApp 6.5 controller and upload the resulting configuration XML files to Smart Tools.
  2. Smart Tools analyzes the XenApp 6.x configuration XML files. Afterward, you select the application and policy settings you wish to migrate.
  3. Migrate the selected applications and policies. Download and execute the automatically-generated PowerShell scripts on the XenApp 7.x controller.

For instruction for performing a manual XenApp migration, see Migrate XenApp 6.x manually with Smart Tools

After you perform the migration, you can log on to your XenApp 7.x Site and perform the following tasks:

  • Set up the session hosts
  • Set up Site access with Storefront
  • Publish applications and roll out to end users

VDI-in-a-Box migrations

Prerequisites

Before you migrate VDI-in-a-Box 5.4 to XenDesktop 7.x, ensure you have the following items:

  • A VDI-in-a-Box deployment running virtual desktops. Ensure that the users are assigned with correct templates. By assigning a user to a template, the user will be given access to the desktops from that template.

  • A XenDesktop 7.x deployment in a supported resource location. You can deploy XenDesktop 7.x to your resource location using your own deployment process or you can use the XenApp and XenDesktop blueprints available in Smart Tools. For more information about using these blueprints, see Deploy XenApp and XenDesktop blueprints to a production environment
  • You have applied the patch described in CTX213475 to your VDI-in-a-Box environment. This patch fixes an issue in which the generated PowerShell scripts do not function as expected, resulting in a failed migration.
  • After applying the patch, you have run the Migrate to Citrix Studio wizard using the VDI-in-a-Box console and downloaded the PowerShell scripts that the tool generates, in UTF-8 encoded format.

Task overview

  1. Connect your VDI-in-a-Box deployment to Smart Tools. To do this, you add the details for your hypervisor to Smart Tools as a resource location.
  2. Select the exported VDI-in-a-Box golden image you want to use for the migration. Smart Tools will install the Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) on this image.
  3. Upload the exported PowerShell scripts generated by the Migrate to Citrix Studio wizard.
  4. Select the Delivery Controller in your XenDesktop 7.x Site. Smart Tools will communicate with this controller and execute the PowerShell scripts you uploaded.
  5. Run the migration scripts to create Machine Catalogs and Delivery Groups with the same VDI-in-a-Box settings.
  6. Verify the migration using Citrix Receiver.

For instructions for performing a VDI-in-a-Box 5.4 migration, see Migrate VDI-in-a-Box 5.4 to XenDesktop 7.x.
